Hudson River Valley Tour
Members of Mount Vernon’s Connoisseur Society and other supporters enjoyed a wonderful autumn tour of the Hudson River Valley in October, with a special focus on sites related to George Washington.
Following the presentation of the George Washington Prize in New York, the group of 19 participants visited Washington sites in Lower Manhattan; Washington’s Headquarters at Newburgh; Olana, the home of Frederic Church; Clermont, a Livingston family home visited by the Washingtons; and Edgewater, a beautifully restored antebellum home. In addition, the group received a behind-the-scenes tour of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, historian-led private tour at West Point, and dinner at the Culinary Institute of America. Mount Vernon Library Research Fellow Dr. Charlene Boyer Lewis served as historian-in-residence throughout the journey and delivered an insightful evening lecture on Margaret Shippen Arnold, the influential wife of infamous traitor Benedict Arnold.
The Connoisseur Society is a group of George Washington enthusiasts who are dedicated to supporting the acquisition, preservation, and conservation of Mount Vernon’s rich and diverse collections.
